​What is Causing Your Bad Night Vision?

Even a person with seemingly great vision during the day, or when there is plenty of light, can struggle at night. If you have found yourself squinting to see in fainter light, you might have night vision issues. This is particularly dangerous if you’re driving; when you have poor night vision, even a city road at night can make you struggle. What is causing this, and what should you do?

The Underlying Cause

If you have developed bad night vision, don’t upset yourself by assuming it is something terrible. If your eyes are otherwise healthy and you have no other complaints, then it is probably something rather simple, like dry eye. Chronic and acute dry eye are very common conditions, and very manageable. If you have this problem, you may feel like there is something in your eye, or feel irritation or pain when blinking. Sometimes, dry eye can be barely noticeable, even when it’s chronic, and you don’t notice it until night falls. Use drops, and see your eye doctor.

Cataracts are more serious and can cause night vision issues. Over time, the lens of your eye that sits behind the pupil gathers the debris of dead cells. This leads to cloudy eye lenses, or cataracts. Since it usually takes many years for this problem to develop, it happens most in older people. It is one of the many reasons to see an eye doctor regularly, particularly as you age. Blurry vision is common, as is poor night vision. Again, the way to address this is to see your doctor.

It could simply be a matter of a bad prescription. Or, you might not be getting enough vitamin A, which helps keep your eyes healthy. Diabetes can also cause related vision issues. All of these things can be helped, as long as you see your doctor.
