The Making of Eyeglass Lenses

Apr 17th 2018

When you think of eyeglasses, it is natural for your first thought to be that they’re made of glass. After all, it’s in the name. They are often not, however. Even some early forms of eye protection, before what we currently know as corrective lenses, were made of quartz. Later, it was common for eyeglasses to be made of glass. Since, however, professionals in the optics industry have found much better ways of correcting vision and protecting the eyes. Now, eyeglass lenses are often made of special plastics.

Why Plastic?

Plastic is lighter than glass. This means that it puts less pressure on your face and is more comfortable to wear on a daily basis. Plastic also holds protective coatings better, like anti-glare coating, and the type that defends against the blue light of electronic devices. One of the most important features of these plastics, of course, is their safety. They are safer than glass when it comes to impact. Glass may shatter and injure you, but plastic is not likely to do so.

The Types

There are a few common types of plastic for use in eyeglasses: standard, polycarbonate, Trivex, and high-index. Basic plastic lenses are made of a plastic polymer. Polycarbonate lenses are made from a plastic that is very clear and easily molded for the right optics. They are also particularly resistant to damage. They’re great for children, or those whose lives put glasses at risk of damage. Trivex lenses are also impact-resistant, and made of a urethane-based, pre-polymer plastic. These also offer UV protection to the wearer.

You can also have high-index plastic. This type may contain sulfur, which gives it a higher refractive index and means that you can have a much thinner lens, which is useful for those with strong prescriptions. These lenses are heavier, however, than standard plastic.

There are far more options out there for you when it comes to eyeglasses lenses. Find out just how many by asking your optometrist, and then shop online at Speert.
