When and Why
You should always use safety eyewear during any activity that can affect your eyes. This, of course, includes tasks like welding, in which sparks and other items may hit your eyes. However, sparks and particles are not the only risk to eyes. Heat, smoke, and chemicals are also risks. So, if anything may reach your eyes, safety eyewear is better than standard glasses.

Using safety eyewear is very simple; you select the proper type—depending upon the nature of the work—and put them on. Keep them on as long as you are working, or any work is going on near you. Other people’s work can still sometimes affect your eyes, so keep them on as long as you’re in a dangerous workplace.

Safety eyewear is very helpful and can save you from very bad accidents. However, it’s not perfect. The materials used in safety glasses can differ and are meant to be used at different times. Some protect from sparks and particles, others from gases. Always make sure you’re using the right type and using it correctly. Otherwise, it may not be much help.
