Bifocals: Do You Need Them?
Jul 27th 2016
Have you ever wondered what, precisely, bifocals are, or how you would know that you might need them? Bifocals are glasses that provide two prescriptions in one lens. Usually, they look like regular glasses, but for the outline of a smaller lens segment near the bottom of each lens for reading. Some bifocals combine the two prescriptions more seamlessly, getting rid of that noticeable segment.
The need for bifocals usually occurs around middle age or later. People find themselves struggling to see their reading materials, and pulling them to and from their faces, despite wearing their prescription glasses. If you are adjusting your book, or squinting to see the computer, even though you have your glasses on, or your contacts in, then you may need to see your optometrist and ask about bifocals. This is particularly true if you are over the age of forty.
This vision problem is called presbyopia. This occurs when the part of your eye that focuses your vision thickens and loses flexibility over time. That is why it is an age-related condition, rather than environmental or genetic like some other common conditions. This makes it harder to focus on objects close to your eyes.
It’s important to see your optometrist if you have these issues. These problems may not necessarily be caused by presbyopia, or need bifocals. Your physician will be able to tell if this is the case, and get you the proper prescription. In some cases, laser surgery may be the better option.
